Branding

« Back to Glossary Index

Branding is the process of shaping the identity of a company, product, or person — it’s how you stand out, stay memorable, and make people feel something when they hear your name.

The word comes from the old practice of marking livestock with a “brand” (yes, literally burning a symbol into cattle). Today, it’s a bit less smoky but still about leaving a mark. In business, branding means defining how your brand looks, sounds, and behaves: logo, colors, tone of voice, messaging, values, and even customer experience.

Think of Nike. The swoosh, the “Just Do It” slogan, the athletic vibe — that’s branding. It’s what makes people associate Nike with action, energy, and performance. Good branding tells a story and creates emotional connections. It’s not just decoration — it’s strategy.

Branding works across platforms: your website, social media, ads, packaging, emails, even your error messages. Everything your brand does is branding, whether you plan it or not. So better to do it on purpose.
