Storytelling

« Back to Glossary Index

Storytelling is the art of using stories — with people, tension, and emotion — to make something more engaging, memorable, and human.

It’s as old as campfires and cave paintings, but in tech, storytelling means designing a product or experience that feels like a journey. It could be the way a landing page unfolds like a plot, or how a product tour introduces features like characters in a show. The idea is to connect emotionally while guiding someone through information or interaction.

When done well, storytelling in UX keeps people interested, builds trust, and can even make instructions or dry data feel exciting. A good example? Think of how Duolingo teaches you a new language: there’s a goal, challenges, feedback, and a sense of progress — like the plot of a mini-adventure.
