SaaS

« Back to Glossary Index

SaaS (short for Software as a Service) is software you use online — like Google Docs, Dropbox, or Zoom — instead of downloading and installing it on your computer.

The idea took off in the early 2000s with better internet speeds and cloud infrastructure. Instead of buying a CD or downloading a program, you just go to a website, log in, and start working. You pay a subscription (monthly or yearly), and the provider takes care of updates, security, and servers. All you need is a browser and Wi-Fi.

Why is SaaS so popular?

Because it’s easy. You can access it from anywhere, share data in real time, and skip the hassle of maintenance. It works for individuals (like paying Canva Pro) or entire companies (like managing sales with Salesforce or customer support with Zendesk).

SaaS is now the default model for most modern tools — whether you’re editing photos, signing contracts, or running an online store.
