User persona

Back to glossary

User persona (often just persona) is a semi-fictional portrait of a key user type, built from research: goals, frustrations, behaviors, and context — not a random stereotype or a celebrity stand-in.

In UX design, personas keep the team aligned on who they’re designing for when they debate features, copy, or flows. A good persona includes job or role, motivations, pain points, and how they might use the product. Marketing teams often create buyer personas with a similar idea focused on purchase decisions.

A real-life example of a user persona

Instead of saying “our users are everyone,” a clinic site might design for “Maya, 34, books appointments on her phone between shifts, hates long forms, needs clear pricing.” That profile shapes the user journey, wireframes, and CTAs more than a generic “busy professional” label.

Personas are tools, not truth carved in stone: update them when research changes. For a practical how-to, see How to Create a Buyer Persona.
