Ideal customer profile (ICP) is a tight description of who you sell to first: industry, size, location, the problem they already feel, what they use today, and whether they can pay. It is a segment, not a mood board.
A user persona is a research-based portrait of a person using the product (Maya on her phone between shifts). An ICP is the account or buyer worth chasing — often the one whose lead belongs in the CRM. Your value proposition has to match that profile or the copy is aimed at a crowd that will never buy. User research beats guessing “anyone with a website.”
A real-life example of an ideal customer profile
“Small businesses in Atlanta” is a market. “Decatur salon owners, 2–8 chairs, still taking walk-ins by phone, who want same-week online booking” is an ICP. You can find them at a Chamber meetup or Atlanta Tech Village faster than you can advertise to “everyone.” If that group doesn’t nod, a bigger audience won’t save the pitch.
