AI Overviews are Google’s AI-written summaries that appear on some SERPs: a short answer at the top, sometimes with source links, before the classic blue results.
They sit in the same shift as AEO and GEO: the engine may satisfy the question without a visit. Clear pages, original facts, and structured data still help you get cited; they do not guarantee a click. Rankings can look stable while organic clicks fall — the summary absorbed the visit. Google’s Search Console can show impressions in generative features; that is visibility, not proof that someone opened your page.
A real-life example of AI Overviews
Someone searches “emergency plumber near Decatur.” An overview lists hours, a phone number, and two citations. They call from the results page and never tap your site. You still “won” the question; analytics may show a quieter session.
Write to be the source machines summarize, then measure leads and calls — not only rankings. See AEO and GEO: the new SEO and The Future of Websites in the Age of AI.
