GEO

Back to glossary

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your content shape how generative AI systems write their answers — so your brand, facts, and framing show up inside the response, not only as a blue link or a one-line quote.

If AEO focuses on becoming the answer (or a cited source), GEO goes a step further: it aims to influence the generated text. Clear explanations, original data, consistent entity names, and structured data help models reuse your material with less hallucination. Both sit next to traditional SEO, but the prize is visibility inside the answer.

A real-life example of GEO

Someone asks an AI: “What’s a fair budget for a small-business website?” A site that only has fluffy marketing copy may never appear. A site with a concrete guide, ranges, and definitions is more likely to feed the model’s reply — even when the user never clicks through. That’s GEO at work.

There’s no single “GEO ranking” yet, so results are messier to measure than classic SEO. Still, the direction is clear: write to be chosen by machines that summarize. Dive deeper in AEO and GEO: the new SEO.
