Soft launch is a limited release of a product, site, or app: you go live for a small group, one city, or without big marketing — then expand once things hold up.
It sits between an MVP (the smallest version that can teach you something) and a full launch. The goal is real traffic and real feedback with less risk: broken checkout, unclear UX, or support overload stay contained. Often paired with beta testing and basic QA before you spend on ads.
A real-life example of a soft launch
An Atlanta bakery opens online ordering for Midtown regulars only for two weeks. Shipping rules, inventory sync, and pickup times get stress-tested. When those work, they announce citywide. Same idea as a restaurant soft opening before the big night.
Soft launch is not “hide forever.” It is a controlled start. For validating before you build big, see How to Test a Business Idea.
