Digital asset

Back to glossary

Digital asset is a digital resource that a person or business owns or controls and that creates value. It can be managed, improved, transferred, licensed, or monetized even though it isn’t a physical object.

For a business, digital assets include its website and domain, content, customer data, social profiles, product photos, apps, software, and visual branding. The term can also include cryptocurrencies and tokens, but in everyday business strategy it usually covers the broader digital resources that support revenue, reputation, and operations.

A real-life example of a digital asset

A neglected website may look like an expense on a hosting bill. A maintained site with useful articles, search visibility, customer inquiries, and an established domain is different: it keeps generating attention and leads. Like a physical storefront, its value grows when it is cared for.

Digital assets need clear ownership, backups, access controls, updates, and performance tracking. A valuable account that only one former employee can access is an asset at risk. Explore the business perspective in What Is a Digital Asset and Why Your Business Should Care.
