Copywriting

Back to glossary

Copywriting is the craft of writing text with a job: move a reader toward a decision. On a website that means headlines, landing pages, CTAs, product blurbs, and emails — not a novel, and not a technical spec.

It overlaps with UX writing (the words inside the product), tone of voice (how the brand sounds), and storytelling (the narrative that makes the offer feel human). Good copy is specific: who it’s for, what changes, what to do next. Vague slogans waste the click you already paid for on the SERP.

A real-life example of copywriting

A plumber’s homepage says “Quality service.” Another says “Same-day leak repair in Atlanta — call before 2pm.” The second is copywriting with a job. The first is a poster with no next step.

Pair clear copy with a content strategy so the blog, ads, and site say the same thing. For the tiny words that prevent friction, see UX Writing – a Deep Dive.
