Some names never make it into the history books — but they’re behind every click you make. Radia Perlman is one of them. An engineer, mathematician, and one of the most influential minds in modern computing, she helped build part of the invisible foundation the internet runs on. Her story is also part of a larger conversation about who actually builds technology — and who gets the credit.

Who Is Radia Perlman?

Born in 1951 in Virginia, Perlman grew up in a family of engineers and went on to study math and computer science at MIT — at a time when women were a notable minority in those hallways. She didn’t treat it as an obstacle. It was simply the environment she worked in.

Over the course of her career, she accumulated more than 100 patents and wrote networking textbooks that are still used in university programs around the world.

The Problem Nobody Had Solved

In the early 1980s, Ethernet networks were growing fast — but they had a critical flaw. If redundant connections existed between devices, data packets could loop endlessly, crashing the entire network.

It was a real, urgent problem with no clear solution. Perlman solved it in a matter of days with an algorithm she designed almost on the spot: the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP). She described it as a quick fix she expected to be temporary. It’s been running for over four decades.

What the STP Actually Did

The Spanning Tree Protocol taught networks to find the right path and automatically disable redundant ones. No loops, no crashes, no manual intervention needed.

Thanks to that, Ethernet went from connecting a few hundred devices in a single building to supporting networks with hundreds of thousands of nodes spread across the globe. It’s a big part of what made the internet scalable — and it’s one reason human judgment in technology still matters more than it might seem.

Why Her Name Isn’t Better Known

Perlman solved one of the most critical problems in modern computing, and yet her name rarely comes up when people talk about the pioneers of the internet. It’s not an isolated case. Throughout history, women’s contributions to science and technology have been systematically ignored, minimized, or attributed to others. The work was there. The recognition wasn’t.

Her story is part of that pattern. This series exists, in part, to correct it.

The Poem She Wrote to Explain Her Algorithm

What sets Perlman apart isn’t just the technical depth of her work — it’s the clarity with which she thinks through problems. To explain how the STP works, she wrote a poem (known as “Algorhyme”) that captures the process with a precision most academic papers don’t achieve.

That detail says a lot about how she approached her work: no unnecessary reverence for complexity, just a focus on making ideas understandable.
