Meta description

Back to glossary

Meta description is an HTML snippet that summarizes what a page is about. Search engines may show it (or a rewritten version) under the blue title link in results, so it acts like a tiny ad for the click.

It doesn’t directly “rank” you the way strong content and keywords can, but a clear, honest description can improve click-through when you do appear. Aim for one unique description per important URL — landing pages, product pages, posts — not a site-wide copy-paste.

A real-life example of a meta description

Two coffee shops rank for “best espresso downtown.” One snippet says “Menu”; the other says “Single-origin espresso, walk-in or order ahead — open until 8pm.” Guess which gets more taps. Same idea as a storefront sign vs. a blank window.
