Loyalty program

Back to glossary

Loyalty program is a structured thank-you for coming back: punch cards, points, tiers, early access, a birthday perk. Retention is “they still buy.” Loyalty is “they pick you on purpose, tell a friend, and forgive a bad Tuesday.” The program is the mechanism; customer lifetime value is the payoff.

It is not a CRM (that stores the history) and not churn (that is the leak). You need both: first-party stamps in the CRM, then rewards that feel earned, not spam. E-commerce and Shopify apps make points easy; a café can still do a paper card. Keep it simple or people will not bother. Customer-centric beats a maze of rules.

A real-life example of a loyalty program

An Atlanta gym stamps ten visits, class eleven is free — plus a text when a favorite instructor opens a slot. Members stay. A 47-tier app nobody opens is decoration. Same idea as the Midtown bakery that emails Friday regulars a croissant code because the list is theirs (first-party data), not a rented ad graph.

Reward the habit, then measure whether churn actually dropped. How-to: Customer Retention for Small Business and gyms that retain members.
